  1. Free Comic Book Day at Fully Booked

Last May 23 was Free Comic Book Day at Fully Booked. On this day, all branches of Fully Booked gave away free comics to anyone who came to their stores.

Free Comic Book Day is a promotional effort to encourage readers to patronize new titles and encourage "newbies" into the joys of comic book reading and collecting. This is an annual event in the US and Canada which is scheduled during the first Saturday of May. It is often tied to the release of a major film adaptation of a well known superhero franchise such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine this year or the upcoming release of Iron Man II on May 7 next year.

As early as 6:30 AM, there were already people lined up and waited in front of Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street branch. By the time I arrived, around 10 AM, there was a long line already stretching from the bookstore all the way to the car park. Kids, their parents, and adult comic book fans waited in line in the heat to get their free comic. It took me almost an hour before I could even get in and pick a comic that I wanted. There were so many titles to choose from that I wished I could pick up more than one title. Some of the titles they had included, Shonen Jump English, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons and a Wolverine Origins comic. I personally ended up choosing an Avengers comic.

  2. Haruhi Second Season has aired in Japan!

When the popular anime series, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yƫutsu), was rumored to have a second season, fans and bloggers alike went into a frenzy. This quickly turned into a disappointment when it was announced that it was actually going to be reruns of the first season. However, speculation for a second season never seemed to diw down, due in part to people behind Haruhi keeping details about the re-airing so secretive and cryptic.

In a brilliant marketing strategy (at least in my opinon), the producers of the anime sneaked in the first of the new episodes in the guise of first season reruns. Within hours, 2ch in Japan exploded with hunderds of posts a minute excited about Haruhi's return. It didn't take long before anime news blogs like Sankaku Complex caught wind of it and started spreading the good news.

The new episode "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" was aired last Thursday, May 21, 2009. It is billed as episode 8 of the series re-airing. The series will have a total of 28 episodes and will be shown in chronological order with first and second season episodes alternating in the re-airing.

A subtitled episode of Haruhi Season 2 Episode 1 is available HERE.

  3. TOKIO's Nagase Tomoya to appear as a superspy in upcoming drama

Nagase Tomoya, lead vocalist of Johnny's Entertainment band TOKIO, will be starring as a superspy in a new upcoming drama next season.

Nagase is not only a popular J-Pop icon but also an accomplished actor who has starred in more than 30 Japanese dramas. Some of the dramas he's starred in include Ikebukuro West Gate Park, Mukodono, Tiger & Dragon and My Boss My Hero.

Nagase will play Yoroi Kyosuke, a swindler who is serving time in jail after being caught for more than a dozen cases of fraud. The government decides to use his skills by recruiting him to become a spy that will fight against terrorists. This premise actually reminds me of that Vin Diesel movie, XXX.

In typical spy fashion, he'll be equipped with a variety of gadgets including a ring that turns into a gun and a shoe that doubles as a cell phone. Get Smart anyone? He'll also be in disguises where he'll act as a pilot, doctor and a Korean actor resembling Bae Yong Joon. He'll even have a "Bond girl" character named Dorothy.

As you can see, this drama is going to spoof alot of spy movies and with Nagase's excellent comedic timing, this show sounds like it's going to be full of laughs.

NTV will start airing this series in July, putting it on the network's Saturday 9 P.M. time slot.

  4. Blood: the Last Vampre set to release a live action movie

The popular anime film, Blood: the Last Vampire, is set to release a live action movie in May. The film is being produced by Bill Kong, producer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon & Hero, and to be directed by Chris Nahoon. The movie is to be primarily filmed in English rather than in Japanese just like the original animated film.

The movie will be set in 1948 Japan shortly after World War II during the American occupation of Japan. The plot follows the story of Saya, a half human-half vampire who is part of a covert government agency that hunts and destroys vampires and other demons. Korean actress Jun Ji Hyun, known for her wildly successful movie, My Sassy Girl, will be portraying the title character.

Japanese actress Koyuki will be playing Onigen, the high ranking vampire that Saya will fight. Koyuki is best remembered for role as Iwaya Sumire in Kimi wa Petto opposite Matsumoto Jun, and as Taka in the Tom Cruise blockbuster, The Last Samurai.

The live action movie will be the 6th installment to the franchise which includes the full length anime film, a one-volume manga, three Japanese light novels, a video game and an anime series, Blood+, which is set in an alternate universe.

The film is scheduled to premier in Japan under the title Last Blood on May 29, 2009 to be followed by a UK and France showing in June. Universal Pictures have reportedly gotten the rights for a US release but no release date has been confirmed as of yet.

  6. Saizen, a little bit of Japan in the heart of the metro

100-yen shops are dry good shops that sell various items including household utensils, office supplies, and even arts & crafts for a low fixed price of 100 yen. 100-yen shops can be found almost everywhere in Japan because of the convenience in buying everyday items at an affordable price. They are gaining popularity around the world with similar shops like dollar stores and one pound shops popping up everywhere as well.

Here in the country, we even hae our own version of the 100-yen shop called Japan Home Center, selling cheap slightly lower quality goods. Imagine my delight when an original 100-yen shop makes it way here and puts up a branch in Manila.

Daiso is the largest franchise of 100-yen shops in Japan, owned by Daiso-Sangyo Corp. They opened a new branch on the 3rd floor of Robinson's Galleria. Saizen, as they call the branch here, covers 800 square meters of shop space with thousands of different items that you might see in a typical Japanese 100-yen shop and every item in the store are at a low fixed price of PhP85.00.

I personally enjoy spending time in office supplies, stationary, and arts & crafts shops so it was a big treat for me to go there. They are like a supply store that you can find a lot of items you may need for your home, school or office and for the low price of PhP85.00, you can really find a bargain.

Whether its for your own personal needs or to give as gifts to your friends and family, Saizen has a little bit of everything for everyone. You are also guaranteed quality as all the items come from Japan and are even branded. Even celebrities shop at Saizen. I had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Donita Rose as my friends and I were leaving.

  7. Star Trek 2009 review

"I'm giving it all she's got, Captain."  One of the most memorable lines in the original series and in the new remake simply known as Star Trek.  And just like I geek I got so excited hearing that line.

To be honest, I have never been one to be a die-hard Star Trek fan, but I have always loved the series.  I still remember my childhood watching the reruns of this series (as I was not born yet at the time XD) and having fond memories of wanting "to boldly go, where no man has gone before."  I remember growing up to watching The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, briefly of Voyager and even the last series Enterprise, and being fascinated by the universe that the characters moved around in and the rich history of a universe just as conflicted as our current world.  So when news came out that a remake of the original Star Trek series was being made, I was both excited and afraid of how it will turn out.  With the string of movies based on old series and comic books of my childhood coming out left and right, it comes as a wonder how this movie would fare with the others.

I wasn't disappointed at all with the movie.  The cast comprises a group of well placed and talented actors that made the extra effort to research and learn about their roles by keeping the essence of these characters while bringing them up to date to the modern world.  The cast includes Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr.
  8. Solon speaks against Online Games

With the recent uproar caused by the proposal and passage of what is now known as the "Hentai bill,"  another member of the house representative has seen fit to attack online games.

"DOTA, or any role-playing game for that matter, may be fun, but it won’t be able to teach you the skills you need for your first job, or for higher education."  This was an excerpt from the recent speech made by AKBAYAN reprentative Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel during the commencement excersises of University of the Philippines Cebu College.

In her speech, she actively voiced her opinion against online games and that it should only be treated as something addictive.  She goes on further to state that unless you are on the verge of game development, that we won't learn from them and should simply keep it in moderation.  She even stressed the need to be physically fit as opposed to playing online games.

  9. X-Men Origins: Wolverine mini-review

Last Friday, May 1, 2009, a bunch of us decided to watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This is one of a list of movies that I have been anticipating this year. There has been a lot of hype wit this movie so I have been eager to see whether it would live to its hype. Hugh Jackman would be reprising his role as Logan aka Wolverine.

The movie begins in the 1800's depicting his family and how he first discovered his mutant powers. Victor Creed is revealed to be a mutant too and they both run off to escape the townspeople. They are then shown fighting in the American Civil War, World War I and II, and the Vietnam War. Eventually when it was revealed that they were mutants, where they are then invited to join an Elite Team of mutants where we are first introduced to the rest of the cast.

The cast includes Liev Schreiber as Victor Creed aka Sabretooth, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Daniel Henney as Agent Zero, and will.i.am as John Wraith. I personally enjoyed Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. He really pulls off that smart-ass attitude that Deadpool is known for. The action sequences were played out well from the start and you get the feel of how the rest of the movie is going to be like.
